School Choice in Yonkers - What it Means for You!
Yonkers Public Schools utilize a School Choice Process, meaning students from all over the city have the opportunity to attend any school within the district. However, there are two types of preference given to applicants--sibling and attendance zone. If a sibling is already enrolled in DiChiaro, a brother or sister living in the same household would get first preference. Secondly, DiChiaro is one of the schools considered to have an “attendance zone”. Students living within the attendance zone would get second preference. Therefore, Armour Villa families fall into this category. For more detailed information on this process and a catalog of schools, please visit http://www.yonkerspublicschools.org/docs/schools/1617/School-Program-Catalog-2016-2017.pdf
Registration for the 2016/2017 school year has ended. For anyone coming into the district after February 20, 2016, placement will be made based on seat availability. Historically, DiChiaro has always been filled to capacity with an extensive waiting list. The retention rate at DiChiaro is high, so while there may be 50 spaces available for Pre-K, there may only be 6 spaces left for Kindergarten. This is important to keep in mind should you have younger children in pre-school and are deciding when to send them to the public school. With the implementation of all-day Pre-K, DiChiaro has become even more popular, so registering on time is extremely important. We recommend making your appointment at the YPS information center during the fall prior to your child’s start.
